crew member course Sailing yacht

Every good sailor knows that a good voyage is measured not only by the skipper of the boat but also by the quality of the crew that sails with him.

To this end, we conduct the ISSA Crew member course at our school.

The crew member course –  suitable for ages 10 and up.

The purpose of the course is to expose its participants to the sailing vessel called a yacht. We will learn together how to use the various systems that exist in the boat, how to tie knots, hold a rudder, raise and lower an anchor and be a helping force for the skipper.

The length of the course is 2 days.

Minimum course participants: 4

*For a private course of up to 3 people, the cost is 2000€ plus an additional 160€ per person for the certificate.

Course at a Glance

Who the course is for

Suitable from age 10 and up — for children, teenagers and adults with no previous sea experience. This is our most basic course in the sailing-yacht field.

Course duration

Two days.

Training vessel

A sailing yacht — students learn the boat’s systems and how to function as supporting crew, not as commanders.

Licence / certificate awarded

An ISSA Crew Member certificate — a basic training credential. It is not a licence to command a vessel independently.

Where the certificate is valid

The certificate is recognised by ISSA as proof of basic sailing training, and serves as a good starting point or credit towards the advanced skipper courses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ten. No sea experience is needed, and the course works just as well for children as it does for adults.

The two courses cover much the same ground. The difference is the boat you train on: a sailing yacht rather than a motorboat, which means you also learn the sail handling systems.

No. This certificate qualifies you to work as crew, nothing more. To take command yourself you will need a sailing skipper course — Inshore or Offshore Sail.

Two days, and the course fee is €500. The certificate costs a further €160, which covers the study material and postage.

None at all. This is our gentlest introduction to sailing yachts, and it assumes you have never set foot on one.
